The Annual Community Appreciation Seminar was held March 6th at the Tournament Club of Iowa. City Administrator Gary Mahanna started the program and was followed by mayor pro-tem Dave Dvorak, who filled in, for an ill Mayor Gary Heuertz. The keynote speaker was Polk County Supervisor Tom Hockensmith who highlighted several projects that the city, county, state and federal governments have worked together on.

Polk City Receives Grant for Trees

The City of Polk City recently received $1,000 from MidAmerican Energy. The donation was made by MidAmerican employee Tina Dudley who serves as the company’s volunteer community contact in Polk City.

MidAmerican offers the Trees Please! Program to enhance a community’s appearance, help the environment and promote energy conservation,” said Ken Morse of the Polk City Arbor League.

The grants are based entirely on the individual merits of the project, the benefits to the community and the ability to obtain matching funds.

Poll Workers Needed

The Polk County Election Office is in the process of hiring and/or recruiting voters of Polk County who are interested in making some extra money and at the same time volunteering their time to the election process. Our office cannot conduct elections without the help of our poll workers. A flyer outlines details on how to become a poll worker.

An open house was held on February 6 for retiring members Jack Wilkinson and Forrest Olcott of the Polk City Fire Department. Jack has been a member of the department since 1984 and Forrest has been a member since 1994.

The City often receives inquires from citizens wanting to know of people who do snow removal and yard work involving clean up and hauling away of leaves. Staff is working on compiling a list for the public. If you would be interested in being on this list, please contact City Hall at 984-6233 with your information.

Have You Taken the Bus Lately?

Did you know that DART (Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority) provides a bus route to Ankeny three times every Thursday? If you need a ride just call 283-8100.

DART’s On Call service is one of the easiest forms of transportation available. The shuttle operates along a designated route, with scheduled stops in each community, but with advance notice can pickup and drop-off passengers at locations along the route on a time and space available basis. The schedule lists departure times for several key stops.

Broadway Construction Update

Polk County’s Broadway Paving Project is now at a stopping point for the winter. For the winter, all of Broadway will be open and the majority of Broadway will be hard surface with some areas of rock patches. There will also be areas of narrowing due to storm sewer intakes. Construction will continue in the spring with paving.

A snow ordinance is in effect from November 1 to April 1 of each year. Therefore, no person shall park, abandon or leave unattended any vehicle on any public street during a snowfall which has accumulated one inch or more of snow or for a period after the termination of such snowfall if parking such vehicle impedes snow removal operations.
