DART (Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority) is making some major changes to its service this year. Starting in June, staff will be holding 10 open houses around the metro to hand out new schedules and answer questions from the public. Press release. Clean-up Day May 19th

The City of Polk City will conduct a curbside clean-up on Saturday, May 19. Place all of your clean-up items at the curb the night before. This is only for Polk City Residents that live within the city limits of Polk City. STACK, DO NOT DUMP IN A PILE! You may discard household furniture, and solid waste not normally collected! There is a weight limit of 150 lbs per item and a length limit of 6’ (except furniture). See the flyer for complete information.

Rechargable Battery Collection Started.

The City of Polk City is now accepting rechargable batteries to be recycled. In conjunction with www.call2recycle.org you may now drop off old rechargable batteries and cell phones (with or without a battery). There is no cost to the person dropping off the battery. They may be dropped off at City Hall , 112 Third St or the Library, 1500 West Broadway.

8K Run and 5K Run/Walk

The Four Seasons Festival 8k run and 5k run/walk will start July 21st at 7:30 am. The start and finish will be at the Polk City town square at the corner of 3rd and Broadway. Following the races will be a FREE Kids Run to begin at 8:45 for ages 3-8. Awards presentation will begin at 9:00 am at the Band Stand and will include cash prizes for top finishers and special awards to the top male/female Polk City resident in each race.

Packet pick-up will be at the Community Center located at 309 W Van Dorn Street on Friday July 20th from 5-8 PM and race day from 6:30-7:00 am. Cost is only $20/runner or $50/family if postmarked by 7/6/12. Signup at fourseasonsfestival.com and click on “events”, or mail your entry forms and registration fee to:

Tree City Award for Polk City

At the April 23rd council meeting Tree Board chairman Ken Morse presented the city with it’s 19th consecutive Tree City USA Award. The annual award comes from the Arbor Day Foundation. The flag will fly in front of City Hall. Ken along with Phil Jensen also planted a Hackberry tree at North Polk West Elementary School on Arbor day, April 27th. Kindergarden, first and third graders watched and learned as the tree was planted in the school yard.

Fire Dept. Pancake Breakfast and Open House

On Saturday April 21, the Polk City Fire Department held a pancake breakfast and open house. In addition to the food, there were activities for both kids and adults.

Quilts of Valor

A Quilts of Valor workshop was held at the Polk City Community Library April 14th. Quilts of Valor is all about making a comforting quilt for an American Armed Services member touched by war. Completed quilts are scheduled to be on display, in the library, during the month of July. For more information regarding the QOV Foundation visit their website at www.qovf.org.

Polk City Arts Festival

The Polk City Arts Council will be hosting its first “Polk City Arts Festival” at the 4 Seasons Festival on July 20h and 21st. Art can be in the form of many things such as paintings, pottery, jewelry, drawings, quilting, wood working, etc.

The vendor committee is soliciting a variety of visual artists from the community to exhibit and sell their art during selected hours. A large tent, 8 ft. table, two chairs and security will be provided for each vendor in the park. We can accommodate approximately thirty five artists.

Farmers Market 2012

City Wide Garage Sale June 30

The annual Polk City Community Garage Sale will be June 30, 2012. The sale will be from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm rain or shine. Contact Charlotte (984-9258) or Teresa (984-6316) with questions. A flyer and sign up sheet are available. Forms and payment must be received by May 21st.
