With recent heavy rain the Polk County Health Dept has issued a letter to area officials.

There is the potential for backup of the sanitary sewer system in Polk City due to the recent heavy rainfall which has overwhelmed the system. We recommend taking necessary precautions to protect personal belongings and property in lower levels of the home. Citizens most affected by this are the those located in the lower elevations of Polk City. Polk City Officials are asking residents to minimize discharge of water, (ie) laundry, baths, and stool flushing, etc. in order to reduce additional stress on the city’s sanitary sewer system. This rainfall is affecting the santiary sewer system, not the drinking water. Your drinking water is safe.

Jon Davis continues to be the Emergency Agency Liason to the Diaster Recovery Center(DRC). As a reminder, the DRC is open to all residents of Polk County. If you need assistance related to flash flooding, severe storms, or even water/wastewater in your basement consider registering with FEMA (1-800-621-3362) and/or stop at the DRC at East 17th Court and Garfield in Des Moines.

A sidewalk is to be installed on the West side of 3rd street from the City Square to the intersection with West Bridge Road. The construction is scheduled to commence on July 29, 2010, with the contractor having 35 working days to complete the project. As with any construction project, the schedule is regularly subject to change due to weather conditions and workload issues. Regular field meetings, with the contractor, as the construction proceeds will be held and the schedule will be updated.

If you have questions or concerns during construction, please don’t hesitate to ask the project construction observer, Deb Beck, at 669-1016, or Nichole Sungren, the Project Engineer with Snyder & Associates, at 964-2020. The City of Polk City thanks you for your cooperation during this project.

The Broadway Reconstruction Project has re-started. The work has been divided into two (2) phases with the first phase to be between Parker Blvd. and 3rd Street.

Work along the north side of this road section will include work on the storm sewers, pipe work PCC curb and road widening. This work will start from Parker and work east until complete and then on the south side back to Parker.

The road will be open to local residents, but closed to through traffic. While this work is taking place there is to be access to the side roads, businesses and the Golf Course. The Contractor (Des Moines Asphalt and Paving) will coordinate with the residents when they need to pave thru their driveways, all side roads and business entrances will be constructed one-half at a time.

All residents along and affected by the project should be receiving a letter soon on the project.

The detours will be similar to last year and this web site will continually update the current detour routes.

The city has installed a new video surveillance system at it’s recycling center, located at 409 East Northside Dr. The new system can monitor and record persons using the center. The surveillance system was installed because an individual or business from another community may be tempted to deposit yard waste, tree limbs or leaves there. The sytem will also control illegal dumping of items such as appliances or TVs. Public Works Director Mike Schulte is shown demonstrating the system.

Welcome Home! Polk City is a hidden gem just north of the Des Moines metro with all the small town charm and big city conveniences you’re looking for. Throughout Polk City’s history, people who have settled here have talked of being fortunate to reside in such a remarkable community.

Polk City, while being one of the fastest growing communities in the Des Moines metro, still maintains the quality of living that has brought people and businesses here from around the world. Through natural disasters and tough economic times, the people of Polk City have shown resilience and a special pride in community that is unsurpassed.

The land, like the people of Polk City, has strength and charm, far enough away from crowds to offer very competitive prices for homes and undeveloped property, yet close enough to city conveniences to share a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Come and see Polk City for yourself, its home for us, and it can be for you too!

- Mayor Gary M. Heuertz
